Meditation is а great way оf reducing anxiety аѕ іt both quiets the mind, as well as increasing oxygen flow, to relax thе body. It can also reduce thе frequency аnd duration оf anxiety attacks considerably, easing tension, and helping to focus the mind on a single calming thought fоr prolonged periods of time.
Put simply, meditation will help you to discard all negative thoughts, and as a treatment for anxiety, it has been extremely effective. It can take a while though to reap benefits, so it is important to give it time.
Relaxation Meditation
This remarkably easy and relaxing meditation makes use of a little-known secret about the eyes. Allowing the eyes to rest in a soft downward gaze has an instant, automatic relaxing effect. Relaxation meditation provides a great deal of stress reduction and can be used as a quick 2 minute relax and refresh break almost anywhere. You will also realize a heightened sense of alertness.
- Sit comfortably with your spine reasonably straight.
- Allow your eyes to rest comfortably downward, gazing softly, but not focused on anything.
- Without closing your eyes completely, let your eyelids drop to a level that feels most comfortable.
- Continue gazing downward... the act of gazing is your primary focus (rather than the area at which you are gazing). You may notice your breathing becoming more rhythmic.
- It's ok to let your attention drift a bit. If your eyes become very heavy, it's ok to let them close. If you notice you've come out of your relaxed space, simply bring your attention back to your relaxed downward gaze.
Mindfulness
Probably the most popular form of meditation, it’s about being in the present moment and noticing how your thought processes work. The focus is on the breath which is kept constant, and any ‘lines of thought’ that manifest are simply accepted rather than judged. As it is natural for the mind to wander, it will occur many times during a session. When it does occur, the focus is then gently brought back to the breath.
This type of meditation teaches the subconscious to notice when we have negative thoughts, then gently move on from them rather than dwell or ruminate. It takes practice but is a very powerful and effective tool against anxiety.
Other forms of meditation include:
- Universal Mantra Meditation
- Relaxation Meditation
- Energy Healing Meditation
- Color Healing Meditation
All the forms of meditation covered in this chapter are explained in greater detail in our guide: ‘Meditation & Yoga for Beginners’, which is included in our Expert-Help Pack: How to Crush Anxiety... Completely! Professional guidance to get you back to yourself again.
