What causes stress for you may not cause stress for someone else, which is down to how you perceive any given situation. Over time, stress can affect your:

  • Immune system - Feeling stress constantly can make you more susceptible to common illnesses like colds and flu.

  • Heart - Stress is related to high blood pressure, arrhythmia, thrombosis, and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). It can also increase the risk of coronary artery disease, and heart attacks.

  • Reproductive organs - Stress can lead to low fertility, erectile dysfunction, pregnancy complications, and painful menstruation.

  • Lungs - Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can be worsened by stress.

  • Skin – Stress can cause skin problems such as acne and psoriasis.

 

How will stress affect me mentally?

You may notice signs of stress in how you think, act, and feel. You might:

  • Feel irritable and less able to deal with even small problems.
  • Feel aggravated, lose your temper more frequently, and shout at other people for no apparent reason.
  • Feel nervous all the time.
  • Tire easily.
  • Find it difficult to concentrate on tasks.
  • Worry over small things too much.
